So how do we know what ship that a particular shipwreck was? This is a problem maritime archaeologists have to face, sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is a bigger challenge. To answer our research questions, we look for evidence and attempt to find answers, a bit like solving a case.
In the Ada K. Damon's case we already have some information: built in Essex as a fishing schooner, it was converted later in life into a sand transport ship. Mapping a ship holds the key to answer the question of how do we know if we are correct which ship it is. Using measurements from mapping and recreating the remains using a variety of methods, maritime archaeologists assemble the evidence. |
